However, I disagree with the researchers because there is a caveat that they have not pointed out.

They are assuming that you are able to read properly in the first place. This means that you do know how to spell correctly and have a reasonable vocabulary.

Without this initial skill it doesn’t matter which order the letters are in because you will not be able to read them anyway.

So, while this is a neat trick it is actually misleading. There will be people who think that spelling correctly and reading well are skills that are not required and that this research somehow proves that.

The other issue is that if everything was written in this manner eventually people wouldn’t even know which the correct first and last letters were. You do have to be able to spell correctly to have even that amount of skill.

I get frustrated sometimes with the misuse and abuse of the English language especially with the deliberate misspelling of words for signs and business names. I wonder sometimes if those who do such things do know the correct spelling or if they think they have spelled the words correctly.

What it does do though is filter through the community, particularly the poor readers, and they begin to emulate the errors which perpetuate them.

Whenever you are writing material for others to read it is important to get your grammar and spelling correct because there is nothing which shouts ‘rubbish’ as loud as making simple mistakes.

The next big area which will detract from your message is using the wrong word and therefore shouting your ignorance. None of these things are difficult to correct, in fact most word processing programs and even web browsers will do automatic spell checking for you, your emails can be spell checked as you write them as can all your blog or forum posts.

Grammar is a little more difficult but not impossible and the real tricky one is incorrect use of a word. However, if you are unsure of how to use a word you can do a search on that word in Google like this define: pique your interest . Both are very good and give excellent information. Do not neglect the use of the web to assist your writing, do not think that it doesn’t matter and do not think that every country spells the same way or uses the same grammar. Not everything you see as incorrect is, sometimes it is a cultural difference so be careful in your assessments.
