Research: It is important that you do your research first. With the internet and the power of the search engines this is much easier than it used to be. Read the results and collect information in text files. Sometimes your searching will turn up different angles, unusual paths to follow and fascinating people.
Plot: Develop the plot. This is really just a rough draft of where the book starts and how it ends. Fill in the details in the middle and decide what characters you need in your book. Some writers like to storyboard their plot. This is a technique used by the movie makers and even more extensively in the cartooning industry. The idea is that you make up a single frame, like a cartoon frame, for the significant parts of your plot and either draw the scene or describe it intensively. You don’t need to use all the detail when you are writing but the detail will help your work become more believable.
Personas: Develop the characters in your book. The main characters will need to be well described, in writing, because they are what will carry your story and they need to be believable.
